John comes from an artistic family, including the famous surrealist Sir Roland Penrose, with whom he shares a professional artist great grandfather.. John discovered an aptitude for sculpture after retiring from a business career twenty years ago, then training at Edinburgh College of Art Summer school, & a number of sculpture courses at West Dean College.
John’s main focus has been on figurative subjects, with a particular interest in capturing dancers in movement & the essence of birds. Having started to work mainly in bronze resin editions, he has since developed into marble resin & issued several editions in foundry bronze. More recently he has branched into stone carving following a course in Italy and is now creating unique abstract works in various types of stone where the beauty of this material is so effective.
John has exhibited widely with various sculpture groups and has sold his work extensively. Many editions have sold out and his work can be found in private collections across the country. His depictions of dancers in action, birds & animals have proved very popular with a wide range of clients.
